New work – Azimuth

Unveiled on the North Bristol Art’s Trail.

This sculpture is an exploration into negative space and three dimensional drawing. It also plays with the material properties of steel in terms of balance and gravity. It is a sculpture resulting from explorations for a commission to create a monumental gateway sculpture near Penzance.  The gateway sculpture makes use of the negative space as the pathway through the artwork. It will be installed in the spring and is being fabricated at Penzance dry dock weighing two tonnes.

This sculpture evolved out of some of the preliminary sketches. It is deliberately minimal emphasising the clean lines and form. The steel can be seen to be containing three spheres.

Azimuth is derived from the  Arabic السمت as‑samt, meaning “a way, a part, or quarter” and is an angular measurement in a spherical coordinate system.

IKEA interventions

I was commissioned by IKEA Bristol to explore IKEA products in creative ways as part of their 25 year celebrations of being in the UK. Many whimsical concepts and design ideas evolved from this project. My starting point was to do away with function! Some art works created were installed on their shop floor. They are on show in October and November.

The Luton Dunstable Busway sculptures finalised

These are the four designs that were chosen by the local community to be sited at bus stops along the busway. Members of the public voted on 22 potential designs relating to different aspects of Dunstable and Houghton Regis. The sculpture maquettes were on display in Houghton Regis and Dunstable libraries where many people came to view them and vote for their favourite artworks. Many others also had opportunity to add their thoughts by added their comments on-line.  The designs evolved out of community consultation and were developed through a series of workshops with local schools and Central Bedfordshire College working alongside sculptor, Pete Moorhouse.

Icarus – Wall relief

This month I completed a new work Icarus, commissioned by a private client for a contemporary garden. The work gives a sense of movement and flight, the arcs could be seen to be circling the sun and falling to ground as they get too close. The work is laser cut from brushed marine grade stainless steel.

Rococo Gardens Exhibition

Art in The Garden is the Cotswolds newest annual garden art exhibition. I will be exhibiting two works in the Painswick Rococo Garden throughout August.

Annually throughout August the Rococo Garden, Painswick plays host to some of the most exciting and creative artists currently working. The exhibition is predominantly made up of garden or garden inspired art and uniquely many of our pieces are either site specific or created in direct response to the environment they are positioned in. Each year is themed and many pieces of work are available for purchase.

Situated outside the beautiful Cotswold town of Painswick, the Rococo Garden is a fascinating step back to a flamboyant and sensual period of English garden design. This gem of a garden, which was originally laid out in the early 18th century, is set in a hidden Cotswold valley with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.

The 2012 theme for the annual Art in the Garden exhibition is Embarkation for Dangerous Liaisons.  Visitors will be able to experience a wonderful display of sculpture and art in this most beautiful of settings throughout the month of August.

Art in the Garden is open throughout August 2012.  The Rococo Garden is open 7 days a week from 11am to 5pm.

Admission price: £6.50 Adults. £3 Children.

Admission is included in all workshops.
